Looking for a solid starting point for the decade-old MMO Phantasy Star Online 2? The enormous standalone expansion New Genesis, which debuts next week with a total redesign of the game’s appearance and feel, maybe the best bet.
One month after Sega announced the kinda-sorta sequel a June release date, the publisher has announced that you’ll be able to explore New Genesis’ vast open plains on June 9th.

PSO2:NGS will launch after the end of maintenance on June 9, 2021 (Wed).
We will be holding campaigns to celebrate the launch. We hope you’re all looking forward to it too!https://t.co/pxqpPpSl2L #PSO2 #PSO2NGS pic.twitter.com/yQsnbdjqVT
New Genesis is a total reinvention set 1,000 years after the present MMO, with more action-RPG type gameplay in a wide-open world full of creatures to defeat. Mind you, just because it’s a century in the future doesn’t mean you have to start from scratch.
Characters from PSO2 will be able to easily move between the main game and NG (though XP gain and certain currencies will be locked to each instance). NG also has a beefier character creator, yet it retains the ’90s anime appeal of PSO2’s aesthetic.
PSO2:NG will be available on Windows 10, Steam, and the Epic Games Store when routine maintenance concludes on June 9th.
